His Majesty the Emperor of Japan Visits Mongol Koosen Technology College

His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan, who is on a State Visit to Mongolia at the invitation of President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, visited Mongol Koosen Technology College, affiliated with the Institute of Engineering and Technology, on 9 July 2025.

His Majesty visited the Department of Mechanical Engineering and engaged in an open and friendly dialogue with faculty members and students.

Mongol Koosen Technology College is a higher education institution modeled after Japan’s Koosen (Colleges of Technology) system. It aims to introduce technical and engineering “know-how” in education, research, and industry. The college enrolls junior high graduates and offers a five-year integrated curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, leading to a diploma-level engineering degree.

Under the 2014 loan agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Ministry of Education successfully implemented the Higher Engineering Education Development Project, also known as the “1000 Engineers Project”. The initiative aimed to train highly skilled engineers and technology professionals urgently needed in Mongolia, improve the quality of engineering education, strengthen faculty capacity, and modernize the learning and research environment.

As a result of the project, a total of 1098 Mongolian students, teacher researchers studied in Japan, including 292 under joint bachelor programs, 177 under the Koosen program, 37 master’s, 104 doctoral students, and 488 through short-term non-degree training. Of the graduates, 96 percent are currently employed in their fields of expertise.

Currently, three Koosen colleges are operating in Ulaanbaatar, which are the Technology College of the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, Mongol Koosen Technology College, and Shine Mongol Technology College. In addition, three other Koosen institutions are operating in the aimags of Darkhan-Uul, Orkhon, and Umnugobi.
