PRESIDENT VISITS THE UNITED STATES SENATE COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN RELATIONS

President of Mongolia Khaltmaagiin Battulga, who is paying a visit to the United States, visited the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in the Capitol Building on August 1.

The President was welcomed by Sen. James Risch, Chair of the Committee, and Sen. Ed Markey, member of the Committee, and exchanged views on Mongolia-U.S. relations and cooperation.

At the outset, President Battulga stressed that the diplomatic relations and cooperation between Mongolia and the United States had robustly developed over the last 30 years to reach the level of Strategic Partnership. President Battulga mentioned his discussion with President Trump regarding the Mongolia Third Neighbor Trade Act legislative bill and called for support. For instance, President Battulga noted that the 6.8 percent growth in the Mongolian economy was produced by mining and service industries and no tangible growth had been observed in the agriculture and tourism industries. The President spoke about a study report which suggests that adoption of the bill would create 30-40 thousand jobs in Mongolia and the economic and social impacts of the bill would be observed in a short period of time. Members of the Committee asked questions regarding the cashmere market in Mongolia.

The sides also discussed a range of issues pertaining to the Korean Peninsula, peacekeeping operations, and the current state of democracy in Mongolia.
