Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan Visit Memorial Complex for Japanese Nationals

At the invitation of the President of Mongolia, Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, His Majesty Emperor  Naruhito and Her Majesty Empress Masako of Japan are paying a State Visit to Mongolia. Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan visited the Memorial Complex for Japanese Nationals, located in Dambadarjaa, Ulaanbaatar, on July 8, 2025. Their Majesties laid a wreath at the commemorative monument and paid their respects.

Their Majesties were welcomed by N. Bolormaa, Secretary General of the Mongolian Red Cross Society (MRCS), and T. Bayarchimeg, Deputy Secretary General of the MRCS. The MRCS representatives provided a detailed briefing on the complex’s operations and management.

The Memorial complex was established in October 2001 through a joint initiative by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Labor of Mongolia, the Ulaanbaatar City Administration, the Mongolian Red Cross Society, and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW). Its maintenance and preservation are carried out in accordance with a bilateral agreement between the MRCS and the MHLW.

Following the end of World War II, more than 14,000 Japanese nationals, held as prisoners of war in Siberia, were transferred to Mongolia. They took part in the construction of a number of buildings in Mongolia, including the foundation of the Government Palace, the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building and its accompanying 23-unit residential complex, the “Eldev-Ochir” Cinema, the National Library, a 12-unit residential building for the Central Committee of the Party, the main academic building of the Party School, the First Maternity Hospital, and the extension of the National University of Mongolia. They also participated in the development of infrastructure in areas such as Ikh Tenger, Songino, and Nukht.
