Mongolia, China Agrees on Expanding Cooperation in Multiple Fields

President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa and President of China Xi Jinping met on September 2, 2025, and discussed strengthening bilateral ties and deepening cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and energy.

Xi welcomed Khurelsukh’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and also attending the 80th anniversary of China’s World War II victory, praising Mongolia’s historic role in the conflict. Khurelsukh, in turn, thanked Xi for the invitation and highlighted Mongolia’s contribution alongside Soviet forces in the liberation of Northeast China.

The two leaders said political trust between their countries had grown, calling the comprehensive strategic partnership a “model of regional cooperation.” Discussions covered trade, cross-border railway construction, renewable energy, agriculture, and light industry, with both sides reaching consensus on expanding collaboration.

Mongolia proposed boosting mining exports and improving connectivity through ports such as Shiveekhuren-Sekhee, Bichigt-Zuunkhatavch and Khangi-Mandal, aiming to help raise bilateral trade to USD 20 billion. Xi highlighted ongoing projects, including the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod railway and the Erdeneburen hydropower plant, as examples of productive cooperation, and said there was further potential in both bilateral and multilateral initiatives.

The two countries also agreed to work together on preparations for the 2026 UN desertification summit (COP17) in Ulaanbaatar.

Following the talks, the sides signed five agreements, covering honey exports from Mongolia to China, technical cooperation on animal and plant quarantine, metrology standards, conformity assessment with relevant authorities and media collaboration between Mongolia’s MONTSAME News Agency and China Media Group.
