CITIZENS’ CHAMBER HOSTS DISCUSSION THEMED “STATE POLICY TOWARD HUMANITARIANISM”

The Citizens’ Chamber under the President of Mongolia and the Mongolian National Committee of Humanitarianism organized today a discussion about State Policy and Direction towards Humanitarianism.

The Non-Staff Humanitarian Policy Advisor to the President of Mongolia, Ms. S.Purevsuren gave the opening presentation under the topic of government policies and tendency towards humanitarian actions, and introduced main functions of the Mongolian National Committee of Humanitarianism.

Although the Constitution of Mongolia sets a supreme objective of building “a human, civil and democratic society”, concrete policy and support from the authorities are still missing. The participants of today’s discussion was criticizing that humanitarian actions are usually misunderstood as social welfare and charity.

Necessity for developing unified policies and directions to pursue in humanitarian actions was often highlighted.

The participants also noted that actions such as ensuring fair and accountable distribution of humanitarian aid through establishing a national humanitarian fund, improving press and media’s role in boosting communication between the humanitarians and the community, promoting humanitarianism among children and young people and calling them to take part in making the world a better place are highly required.

Present at the discussion were, representatives of government organizations, diplomatic missions, civil societies and citizens. Also, representatives from diplomatic missions of the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea, from NLM Norway in Mongolia and Mongolian students and youth unions shared what government policies and supports for humanitarianism are implemented in their respective countries.
