JAPAN’S FM MOTEGI TOSHIMITSU CALLS ON PRESIDENT BATTULGA

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Motegi Toshimitsu paid a courtesy call on President of Mongolia Khaltmaagiin Battulga, today, while on visit to Mongolia.

At the beginning of the meeting, the President underlined that the visit of Japanese FM maintains the frequency of high-level exchanges between Mongolia and Japan, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dignitaries shared views and updates on the plans for celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties taking place in 2022, and bilateral cooperation in mining, road and transport, infrastructure, trade, and humanities.

President Battulga highlighted that the level of bilateral economic and trade relations is unsatisfactory compared to the history of diplomatic relations, marking the 50th jubilee, with Japan, the Strategic partner and “third neighbor” to Mongolia. Hence, “more efforts should be put into addressing the need to improve effectiveness of Economic Partnership Agreement, signed in 2015”, the President said, and discussed about the possibilities to exploit full capacity for increasing mutual investments.

For instance, the President called for broadening the cooperation into applying Japanese technology to Mongolia, introducing jointly-produced goods and services to second and third markets, and to major development projects, rather than limiting the relations of two countries within the frames of loan and aid.

Moreover, President of Mongolia Battulga Khaltmaa conveyed his heartfelt greetings to Emperor of Japan Naruhito, and Yoshihide Suga, the newly appointed Prime Minister of Japan.

The meeting concluded with Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi comparing the broad range of opportunities available for broadening the ties on the extent of the wide open steppes of Mongolia; and the parties mutually expressed willingness to enrich the bilateral cooperation with new contents and to elevate the relations to a new level.

Amid the ongoing heightened state of readiness in Mongolia due to the global pandemic, the meeting took place under high-class precautionary setting against COVID-19.
