President Khurelsukh visits Rogun Hydropower Plant Construction Site

Within the framework of his State Visit to the Republic of Tajikistan, Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, President of Mongolia, accompanied by Usmonali Usmonzoda, Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan, visited the Rogun Hydropower Plant (HPP) on July 25, 2025, a major development project in Tajikistan’s energy sector.

The Rogun Hydropower Plant is being built on the upper reaches of the Vakhsh River, located southeast of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. With a dam height of 335 meters, it is set to become the tallest hydropower dam in the world. Once fully operational, the plant will generate up to 17 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. This capacity will not only meet Tajikistan’s domestic electricity demand but also enable exports to other countries of the region.

The plant’s first turbine was commissioned in 2018, followed by the second in 2021. By 2029, all six turbines are expected to be fully operational, reaching a total capacity of 3,600 megawatts (MW), making it the largest hydropower plant in Central Asia.

The Rogun Hydropower Plant is not only Tajikistan’s major development project, but is also recognized as a strategic mega-project, crucial for regional energy security and sustainable development.
