President of Mongolia Attends Commemorative Session of UN General Assembly’s 80th Anniversary

President of Mongolia Khurelsukh Ukhnaa attended a commemorative session in New York, United States, marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, on September 22, 2025.

The commemorative plenary session was opened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, who highlighted the UN’s vital role and the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges.

State leaders and public figures also shared their perspectives on the UN’s contributions to peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights.

Founded in 1945 in San Francisco with 51 member states, the United Nations has grown to include 193 countries as of 2024. Mongolia became the 101st member of the organization on October 27, 1961.

Since joining the United Nations in 1961, Mongolia has actively participated at the highest levels, including heads of state and government, in regular and special sessions of the UN General Assembly, as well as in summits, meetings, and other official events.

Demonstrating its commitment to multilateral diplomacy, Mongolia has initiated over 90 resolutions addressing approximately 20 global issues, ranging from international peace and security to democracy, human rights, economic and social development, and humanitarian affairs. These resolutions have been formally discussed and adopted by the UN General Assembly.

Mongolia currently advances five key resolutions adopted biennially by the General Assembly. These include:

  • International Security and the Nuclear-Weapon-Free Status of Mongolia
  • Improving the Living Conditions of Rural Girls and Women’
  • The Role of Cooperatives in Social Development
  • Literacy Education
  • Democratic Education

At the initiative of the President of Mongolia, a new resolution titled “World Horse Day” was adopted during the plenary session of the 79th UN General Assembly. The resolution declares July 11 as World Horse Day to raise global awareness of the cultural, economic, and social significance of horses, especially in rural and nomadic communities.

In March 2025, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched the UN80 Initiative, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. The initiative responds to mounting global challenges in peace and security, as well as a major financial crisis that has necessitated a proposed reduction of the UN budget by up to 30 percent. UN80 seeks to enhance the organization’s effectiveness and operational efficiency through structural reforms and strategic realignments.

The General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to begin in New York on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. A total of 154 countries have confirmed participation at the level of heads of state and government, underscoring the significance of this landmark session.
